Childcare and education

The municipality of Ludvika provides childcare and educational facilities. While each centre is different they are all geared towards everyday educational needs.

For the youngest children kindergarten/nursery, pre-school and daycare are provided.

Basic education consists of a nine-year compulsory school and a voluntary secondary school. Pre-school class, elementary school for years 1-3, middle for school years 4-6, junior high school for years 7-9, followed by three years at senior high school (gymnasium) leading to qualifications to study at college (högskola) and university (universitet).

Childcare

Kindergarten/nursery (förskola)

For children from 1-5 years of age there are Kindergarten and pre-school. For children in need of special support or supervision there are special services. Fees are payable for nurseries and pre-school.

Pre-school (allmän förskola)

Children aged 3-5 have the right to 15 hours pre-school class, each week, free of charge.

Pre-school class (förskoleklass)

Pre-school class in Sweden is compulsory for children from the age of 6.

Daycare (fritidsverksamhet)

For children aged 6-13 who need care before or after school and during school holidays, there are daycare centers. Fees are payable for family daycare. For example:
07:30 - 08:30 daycare before pre-school class, fees are payable
08:30 - 13:30 pre-school class, free of charge
13:30 - 16:00 daycare after pre-school class, fee payable

Children aged 7-16

Attending school in Sweden is compulsory for children from the age of 7 — 16 (forms 1-9), and is free of charge, as is lunch during the school day. The school year starts mid-August and lasts until the beginning of June.

English class

For the academic year 2024/2025, Kyrkskolan is offering prospective Year 7 students to attend a class with 35 percent of the education carried out in English. The education follows the curriculum in the same manner as other classes. More information in English

Performing arts

Västerbergslagens kulturskola External link. is the municipality´s performing arts school where children can have the opportunity to practice dance, music, theatre and drama. There is also a private performing arts school, Ludvika Mini Circus External link..
